Storyline : 1952. Twenty-three year old New Yorker Marty Mauser places one hundred ten percent into everything he does, unfortunately for the world they are all in pursuit of his own self-absorbed wants in he taking advantage of everyone in his orbit. One of those is his married childhood friend Rachel with who he has been having an affair, the consequences of such he doesn’t even consider. He could be as in his own inflated sense of self indeed be the best table tennis player in the world, but in receiving no official support has made no money in the activity. He wants that support to show the world that he is the best in turn to make money in his outward statements of supporting his overbearing mother, who is currently supported by Marty’s uncle, in whose shoe store he works, although that want to show the world he is the best is probably more to stoke his own ego. He feels entitled within the sport as he states an American being seen as the best would be good for the sport’s global profile. To show the world he’s the best, he not only has to make it to the world championships which he cannot afford to attend, but win. Among those he hopes will be able to help him in a less than chance meeting are 1930s retired movie star Kay Stone and her powerful businessman husband Milton Rockwell. But for every step forward Marty makes in his pursuit to make it the world championships, he subsequently seems always to takes two steps in a wrong direction. —Huggo
